Short Notes on Knowledge Acquisition & Representation in Semantic Networks

>> Semantic network focus on the relationships between different concepts. They are graphical depictions of knowledge composed of nodes and links that show hierarchal relationships between objects.

  •
  • >> A simple semantic network is shown above. It is made up of circles and nodes that represent objects and descriptive information about the objects.
  •
  • >> An object is a physical item such as grass, sheep, animal and so on.
  •
  • >> A node can also be concepts, events or actions. A concept is a relationship. Attributes of an object can also be used as node like size, color. class age etc.

>> Nodes are interconnected by links or arcs that show the relationship between the various objects and descriptive factors. Some of the most common arcs are of the ‘is-a’, ‘has-a’ type.

--> ‘Is-a’ is used to show a class relationship , that is, that an object belongs to a large or category of objects.

--> ‘Has-a’ links are used to identify characteristics or attributes of object nodes. Other arcs are used for definitional purpose.

(now analyze the diagram shown above and try to match the subject to it).

>> Semantic network can show inheritance. A semantic network is basically a hierarchy, the various characteristics of some nodes actually inherit the characteristics of others.

>> Semantics nets are used basically as a visually representation of relationships of relationships and can be combined with other representations methods.
